first baptist powell is an elder-led church.

While there are many forms of church governments, we believe that an elder-led model is the most biblically faithful. It allows elders to fulfill their duties as Scripture describes, and preserves the roles and responsibilities of every member within the context of the priesthood of all believers.

Phil Jones

Elder – Preaching/Leadership

Phil came to First Baptist Powell in 1986. He received a Bachelors degree from the University of Tennessee in 1971, and a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1976. In 2000 he completed Doctor of Ministry from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Phil has been married to his wife Kathy for over 40 years. They have five children, Clint, Sarah, Aaron, Laura and Daniel.

mike powell

Elder – Administration/Leadership

Mike came to First Baptist Powell in 1993. Mike has been married to his wife Sue for 40 years. They have two children, Jason and his wife Magen, Charles (Chuck) and his wife Janie, and 6 grandchildren: Zoe, Caroline, Molly, Madeline, Gabrial, and Benjamin.

Jim Waddell

Elder – Senior Adult/Pastoral Care

Jim came to First Baptist Powell in April of 2000. He received a degree from Tennessee Institute of Electronics, and has completed Grace Fellowship International Conference School of Biblical Counseling. Jim has been married to his wife Brenda for over 50 years. They have two children, Lori and Tim.

Tim mcghee


Tim joined First Baptist Powell in 2006. He is married to Carla and they have two daughters Hannah and Micah.

mike petty


Mike joined First Baptist Powell in January, 2007. Mike has served as a pastor in churches in Arkansas and Tennessee and served on the faculty of First Baptist Academy for many years. He began serving as an Elder in 2013 and currently serves as Pastor at Norwood Baptist Church. Mike has been married to his wife Susan for over 30 years. They have two married children, Sarah and Joseph.

tom latham


Tom joined First Baptist Powell in 1998. Tom leads the ministry, “God’s World in God’s Word” using Answers in Genesis material. Tom and Teresa have been married for over 20 years. They have two children.

rick bertou


Rick moved from Pennsylvania to Tennessee in 2008. After 34-years in business, Rick became part of our full-time pastoral staff, responsible for developing strategies that meet our vision goals. He also leads our Family Ministries and Operations Teams. Rick and his wife Cindy have been married for nearly 30-years. They have 5-adult children.

James maples


James joined First Baptist Powell in 2011. James leads the International Outreach Ministry. James has been married to his wife Britney for 15 years and they have three children.

steven mcghee


Steven and his wife Amber joined First Baptist Powell in 2007. Steven leads a Young Families Lifegroup and is involved with various family ministries as well as activities with First Baptist Academy. Steven and Amber have been married for 15 years and have two children – Zachary and Luke.

joe lay


Joe and his wife Gail joined First Baptist Powell in 2008. He is a member of the worship ministry, and served FBC as a deacon for 6 years prior to becoming an elder. Joe and Gail have been married for over 30 years, are from the Knoxville area, and have 2 married children and 1 grandson.

clayton gilley


Clayton became a Christian in 1957. He and Pat were married in 1967. They have two sons and five grandchildren. He was ordained a deacon in 1977. He and Pat served as missionaries in the Philippines from 2002 to 2004. They became members at First Baptist Powell in 2005 and are active in our Life Group and the Worship ministry in the orchestra.

Russell Amanns


Russ has been a life-long member of First Baptist Powell. He and his wife Tracy have been married for 31 years, with three children. A 1986 gradute of the University of Tennessee with a degree in Finance, he is very active in our Prayer Ministry and our Greeter Ministry. 

Todd randolph


An avid author and leader, Todd boasts substantial experience in church planting as both academic researcher and in-field frontline missionary. A graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Todd received his Masters of Divinity in Church Planting in 2002 preparing him to serve in pastoral capacities throughout church plants in Kentucky and Tennessee. He currently leads Koinonia, a Sunday morning Life group for adults 50+. Todd enjoys spending any free time reviewing academic literature from various Christian-based publishing houses and contributing to sermon websites. He celebrates nearly 30 years of marriage with his wife, Cindy, and has two adult daughters.
