Core Classes

Core Classes focus primarily on learning with a goal of expanding biblical-based knowledge of the learner. These short-term groups are organized in three broad categories: Biblical Studies, Theology, and Practical Theology.

Core Classes are offered on various days and times in order to provide multiple opportunities for members and guests to attend. So if a class is not offered at time that meets your schedule, it will likely be offered at another time in the future. Below you will find the present Core Class offerings as well as the upcoming schedule for classes in each of the three categories.

Upcoming Classes

Wednesday evening classes are held from 6:30 – 7:45 p.m.

Biblical Studies

The Discipleship Journey | May 18 – July 20 (10 weeks) | Tim McGhee | Room 240

The Discipleship Journey provides a basic overview of what it means to be a follower of Christ. Topics covered include: the disciple’s identity, the disciple’s guidebook, the disciple’s prayer life, the disciple’s accountability, and the disciple’s final home. This 10 week study will help lay a strong foundation for your walk with Jesus.

Galatians | May 18 – July 20 (10 weeks) | Janice Ramsey | Room 241

The Precepts In & Out study for ladies will focus on Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia that were struggling with this issue, a letter that still speaks today. Its message clearly defines the relationship between Law and grace, and how Christians live under grace, led by the Spirit, free from bondage. We will answer the questions: What does it mean to live under grace? Do you have to keep the Law to be a Christian? All of it or just part of it? Who is right? How will we know?

New Testament Survey | June 29 – Dec 14 (22 weeks) | Eric Sams | Room 250

All Scripture is inspired by God for our good (2 Timothy 3:16). God’s covenant love is displayed through Scripture. This core class will journey through the New Testament from Christ’s first coming as a babe in Bethlehem to his second coming as the conquering King.

Sunday morning classes meet every Lord’s Day from 8:45 – 10:00am

Practical Theology

Membership Matters | July 3 – August 7 | Perry Garrett | Room 232

Membership Matters is a unique class offered for anyone who wants to join or is prayerfully considering becoming a member at First Baptist Powell. You are not making a commitment to join just by attending the class. The class will provide information about our church structure, FBP history, and what we believe the Bible says regarding the importance of church membership.

Christians in the Workplace | July 3 – September 25 | Alan Grissom | Room 304

Our culture has fallen into confusion concerning gender and roles for men and women. In this 13-week class we will examine what the Bible teaches about gender, masculinity, and femininity. This class will be especially helpful for parents as you seek to guide you children through the confusion that is today’s culture.
